Between the Ashes and the Stars
A Window into the Lives of Refugee Students

Stories of displacement, survival and the search for a place to belong.
Written by Hussam Saraf, this collection follows refugee children as they move from conflict and displacement towards new schools, friendships and communities. It explores the memories they carry, the difficulties of starting again and the hope that helps them look towards the future.
The introduction explains that the stories draw on real experiences, with names changed to protect the children’s identities. Through these accounts, the book encourages readers to understand the lives behind the label “refugee” and the effort involved in rebuilding a sense of safety and belonging.
Education is central to these journeys. Caring teachers, friendships and opportunities for self-expression help young people reconnect with learning and imagine what comes next. The title page identifies this as the third edition and names McGuire College, now GSSC.
