Growing more
than a garden.
A lifelong interest in plants, hands-on experimentation and multi-grafting has become a journey of creativity, patience and connection.
My gardens journey
My love of gardening began in Iraq and continued in Australia. Growing fruit trees and edible plants gives me a place to keep learning, try new ideas and share my enthusiasm with others.

In 2021, my multi-grafting work earned a Guinness World Record for five fruit species growing on one tree. Media coverage described ten fruit varieties—a distinction between species and varieties that matters to the story.
For me, different branches sharing one tree also express a message of coexistence and respect.

Taha Al-Ani’s Arabic feature follows my interest in gardening from Iraq to Australia, the experiments behind my multi-grafted fruit trees and the evidence-gathering process for Guinness World Records. It also explores why I see different fruits growing together as an expression of cultural diversity and coexistence.

The garden as a place to learn.
In November 2022, GSSC’s Year 11 VCE Agriculture students visited my garden for a tour and a practical introduction to plant propagation. I shared my experience in grafting and budding, with demonstrations and opportunities for students to practise.
My Gardens Journey page shared the visit on 7 November. GSSC followed with an acknowledgement on 10 November, thanking me for sharing my time, skills and knowledge. The visit brought together two enduring parts of my work: education and gardening.
