Refugee students’ experiences of learning, isolation and connection during the pandemic.
Written by Hussam Saraf in 2020, Through Their Eyes explores how COVID-19 changed the lives of refugee students in Greater Shepparton. Young people already adapting to a new language, culture and education system suddenly had to navigate school closures and remote learning.
The stories examine barriers that made learning from home particularly difficult: shared devices, unreliable internet, lessons in an unfamiliar language and the loss of daily contact with teachers and friends. They also explore the emotional impact of isolation and uncertainty.
Alongside these challenges, the book recognises students’ adaptability and the support of families, teachers and community organisations. It considers how connection and practical support can help students stay engaged in education. The title page identifies Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s Mooroopna Campus.
