My First Meeting with Iraq’s Ambassador and Consul-General in Melbourne

An occasion I will remember

On 5 October 2026, I had the honour of meeting His Excellency Mr Abdul Kareem Toma Mehdi Kaab, Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to Australia, and Mr Belal Mahmood Ateya, Consul-General of the Republic of Iraq in Melbourne, for the first time. Our meeting took place in Melbourne during a community conference celebrating Iraqi Unity Day.

I travelled with a group of Iraqi community members from Shepparton to join the wider Iraqi community in Victoria at the gathering in Melbourne. It was a special personal occasion for me, and I was delighted to meet both the Ambassador and the Consul-General. Their presence alongside the community gave the occasion a welcome sense of connection between Iraq’s representatives and the people they serve in Australia.

The celebration brought together members of the Iraqi community from different backgrounds and reflected the richness and diversity of our heritage. It was an opportunity to celebrate the human and cultural ties that connect us, and the shared sense of belonging that continues to bring us together far from our homeland.

After the event, on the same day and at the same venue, I had a private conversation with the Ambassador, the Consul-General and a number of community representatives. We discussed the affairs of the Iraqi community in Melbourne and ways to improve consular services and make them easier for community members to access.

A range of important concerns, observations and suggestions were raised and discussed. These points were formally recorded among the matters identified for future follow-up and action. I valued the opportunity for community voices to be heard directly and for practical needs to be brought into the conversation.

For me, gatherings like this are a reminder of the importance of continued dialogue, cooperation and service. They create opportunities to strengthen communication between community organisations and Iraqi diplomatic and consular representatives, while keeping the needs of families and individuals at the centre of the discussion.

Taking part also reflected my pride in my Iraqi roots and cultural identity. I believe that supporting initiatives which bring our community together helps younger generations discover Iraq’s rich cultural and civilisational heritage and develop a meaningful connection with it.

I extend my appreciation to the Ambassador and the Consul-General for joining the community, and to everyone who helped bring people together on this occasion. I will remember this first meeting with warmth and respect, and with hope for continued cooperation in support of our Iraqi community in Melbourne.

لقائي الأول بسفير العراق والقنصل العام في ملبورن

في يوم ٥ أكتوبر ٢٠٢٦، تشرفت بلقاء سعادة سفير جمهورية العراق لدى أستراليا، السيد عبد الكريم طعمة كعب، وسعادة القنصل العام لجمهورية العراق في ملبورن، السيد بلال محمود عطية، للمرة الأولى، وذلك في مدينة ملبورن خلال مؤتمر مجتمعي للاحتفال بيوم الوحدة العراقي.

وقد توجهت إلى ملبورن برفقة مجموعة من أبناء الجالية العراقية في مدينة شبرتون، لنشارك أبناء جاليتنا العراقية في ولاية فكتوريا هذه المناسبة. وكان هذا اللقاء مناسبة شخصية عزيزة على قلبي؛ فقد سعدت بلقاء سعادة السفير وسعادة القنصل العام. وقد أضفى حضورهما بين أبناء الجالية شعورًا جميلًا بالتواصل بين ممثلي العراق وأبناء وطننا في أستراليا.

جمع الاحتفال أبناء الجالية العراقية من مختلف مكوّناتها، وعكس ثراء تراثنا وتنوّعه. وكانت المناسبة فرصة للاحتفاء بالروابط الإنسانية والثقافية التي تجمعنا، وبروح الانتماء المشترك التي تبقى حاضرة في حياتنا مهما ابتعدنا عن أرض الوطن.

وبعد انتهاء الفعالية، وفي اليوم نفسه والمكان ذاته، دار بيني وبين سعادة السفير وسعادة القنصل العام وعدد من ممثلي أبناء الجالية حديث خاص تناول شؤون الجالية العراقية في ملبورن، وسبل تطوير الخدمات القنصلية وتسهيل وصول أبناء الجالية إليها.

وخلال هذا الحديث، طُرحت ونوقشت مجموعة من القضايا والملاحظات والمقترحات المهمة، التي سُجّلت رسميًا ضمن الموضوعات المحددة للمتابعة والعمل عليها مستقبلًا. وقد قدّرت هذه الفرصة التي أتاحت إيصال أصوات أبناء الجالية مباشرة، وطرح احتياجاتهم العملية ضمن الحوار.

بالنسبة إليّ، تؤكد مثل هذه اللقاءات أهمية استمرار الحوار والتعاون وخدمة المجتمع. فهي تتيح تعزيز التواصل بين مؤسسات الجالية والممثلين الدبلوماسيين والقنصليين للعراق، مع إبقاء احتياجات الأفراد والعائلات في صميم النقاش.

كما عبّرت مشاركتي عن اعتزازي بجذوري العراقية وهويتي الثقافية. وأؤمن بأن دعم المبادرات التي تجمع أبناء جاليتنا يساعد الأجيال الجديدة على التعرّف إلى إرث العراق الحضاري والثقافي، وبناء صلة واعية وعميقة به.

أتقدم بالشكر والتقدير إلى سعادة السفير وسعادة القنصل العام على حضورهما بين أبناء الجالية، وإلى جميع من أسهموا في جمعنا في هذه المناسبة. وسيبقى هذا اللقاء الأول ذكرى أعتز بها بكل مودة واحترام، وأتطلع من خلالها إلى استمرار التعاون بما يخدم أبناء جاليتنا العراقية في ملبورن.
